How the math works
Board foot: BF = thickness(in) × width(in) × length(ft) / 144, multiplied by quantity. One board foot = a 1×12×12 inch piece (144 in³).
Nominal vs actual: a "2×4" is actually 1.5"×3.5" after planing; a "1×6" is 0.75"×5.5". Choose actual for rough-sawn or hardwood, nominal for dimensional softwood.
Metric: dimensions entered in mm/m are converted (1 in = 25.4 mm; 1 ft = 0.3048 m). 1 BF ≈ 0.002360 m³.
