Sticker Sizing for Sellers: Why Your 900px Design Isn't 3 Inches, and Bleed Eats Your Sheet
Pixels only become inches once you fix a DPI, and the gaps between stickers — bleed plus kiss-cut margin — quietly shrink how many fit on a sheet. Both feed directly into your cost per sticker and the price you should list.
You designed a sticker at 900 × 900 pixels and want to sell it on Etsy. Two questions decide whether you make money: how big does it actually print, and how many fit on a sheet of material? Neither has the obvious answer. A pixel has no physical size until you pick a DPI, and the number that fits per sheet isn’t sheet area divided by sticker area — it’s a grid that the bleed and cut margins shrink in a way that’s easy to underestimate. Get both wrong and your “cost per sticker” is fiction, which makes your price a guess.
Pixels are not a size — DPI is what turns them into inches
This is the single most common misunderstanding in print-on-demand: people talk about a design being “900 pixels” as if that’s a physical dimension. It isn’t. A pixel is just a sample; how large it prints depends entirely on how densely you pack pixels into each inch — the DPI (dots per inch, used interchangeably with PPI here). The conversion is simply:
inches = pixels / DPI
At 300 DPI — the standard for crisp print — 900 pixels is 900 ÷ 300 = 3.00 inches. Drop to 150 DPI (draft quality) and the same file sprawls to 6 inches but looks soft. Push to 600 DPI for fine detail and it shrinks to 1.5 inches of very sharp artwork. The pixels never changed; only the density did. This is why a print shop asks for your artwork’s pixel dimensions and the intended physical size — together they imply the DPI, and DPI below ~300 is where stickers start looking fuzzy at arm’s length.
The practical rule for sellers: decide the physical size you want to sell, then check that your file has enough pixels to hit 300 DPI at that size. A 3-inch sticker needs 900 px; a 4-inch sticker needs 1,200. If your source art is only 900 px, listing it as a 4-inch sticker means printing at 225 DPI and hoping nobody notices the softness.
Bleed and kiss-cut margin steal space between every sticker
Once you know a sticker is 3 × 3 inches, the intuitive way to fit them on a 12 × 12 inch sheet is 12 ÷ 3 = 4 across, 4 down, 16 total. Real production doesn’t work like that, because each sticker needs breathing room on every side:
- Bleed — extra printed area past the cut line (typically 3 mm) so a slightly misaligned cut still shows artwork, not white paper.
- Kiss-cut margin — the gap the cutter needs between stickers (another ~3 mm) so the blade separates the vinyl top layer without slicing into its neighbour.
Both are per side, so each sticker’s footprint on the sheet grows by twice the sum:
cell = stickerSize + 2 × (bleed + margin)
With 3 mm bleed and 3 mm margin, that’s 2 × (3 + 3) = 12 mm of padding, or about 0.47 inches added to each dimension. Our 3-inch sticker now occupies a 3.47 × 3.47 inch cell. And crucially, the fit is computed by whole rows and columns — you can’t print two-thirds of a sticker:
perSheet = floor(sheetW / cell.w) × floor(sheetH / cell.h)
floor(12 / 3.47) = 3 columns, floor(12 / 3.47) = 3 rows, so 9 stickers per sheet — not the 16 the naive division promised. Bleed and margin didn’t nibble a little off the edge; they cost you nearly half your yield, because the floor function throws away the leftover strip that isn’t wide enough for another full column. That discarded margin is the difference between a healthy and a losing price.
Cost per sticker, then a price that survives Etsy fees
Yield is what converts a sheet’s material cost into a per-sticker cost:
costPerSticker = sheetCost / perSheet
A $2.50 sheet that yields 9 stickers costs $0.278 each. Had you believed the 16-per-sheet fantasy, you’d have pegged it at $0.156 — a number that’s off by 78% and would silently gut your margin on every order. This is exactly how well-meaning sellers end up “busy but broke”: the underlying cost was never real.
From there, a markup turns cost into a listing price. The common floor for handmade goods is 3×, which on our sticker is 0.278 × 3 = $0.83. That 3× isn’t arbitrary greed — it’s meant to absorb your labour, the platform’s fees (Etsy’s transaction, payment-processing and listing fees stack up), returns, and the packaging and shipping materials a bare cost-per-sticker ignores. Sell below roughly 3× and you’re often working for free once fees clear.
Worked example, design file to list price
A 900 × 900 px design at 300 DPI, on a 12 × 12 inch sheet costing $2.50, with 3 mm bleed and 3 mm margin, at 3× markup:
- Physical size: 900 ÷ 300 = 3.00 × 3.00 in (76.2 × 76.2 mm)
- Cell with padding: 3.00 + 0.47 = 3.47 × 3.47 in
- Grid: floor(12 / 3.47) × floor(12 / 3.47) = 3 × 3 = 9 per sheet
- Cost & price: $2.50 ÷ 9 = $0.278 each → × 3 = $0.83 list
Nudge any input and the whole chain updates. Shrink the sticker to 2.5 inches and you suddenly fit 16 per sheet, dropping cost to $0.156. Tighten margins to 2 mm and you might reclaim a column. What the number does and doesn’t include
Be clear about the boundary: this calculator prices the material — how many stickers your sheet yields and what each costs in vinyl, with a markup for a suggested price. It doesn’t cost your design time, the printer and cutter’s wear, ink or ecosolvent, weeding and transfer labour, or the true per-order platform and shipping fees, which vary by marketplace and country. The 3× markup is a rule of thumb meant to cover those, not a precise accounting of them.
