Board Feet, Explained: How Lumber Is Really Measured and Priced
What a board foot actually is, the thickness × width × length ÷ 144 formula, why nominal lumber is smaller than it says, and how to turn board feet into linear feet and a real shopping total.
Walk up to the hardwood rack at a lumberyard and the price tag won’t say “$8 a plank” or “$3 a foot.” It says something like “Walnut — $12 BF.” That BF is a board foot, the unit the lumber trade has used for well over a century, and if you’ve only ever bought 2×4s by the stick at a big-box store it can feel like a foreign language. A board foot isn’t a length and it isn’t an area — it’s a volume, and once you understand the simple geometry behind it you can price any board, compare species honestly, and stop overbuying.
What a board foot actually is
A board foot is the volume of a piece of wood that is one inch thick, twelve inches wide, and twelve inches long — in other words, 144 cubic inches of lumber. That’s the whole definition. It doesn’t matter how those 144 cubic inches are arranged: a 1″ × 12″ × 12″ tile, a 1″ × 6″ × 24″ plank, and a 2″ × 6″ × 12″ chunk are all exactly one board foot, because they all contain the same amount of wood. Thinking of it as volume rather than length is the mental shift that makes everything else click.
Because it’s a volume, the formula falls straight out of the definition. Multiply the three dimensions in inches and divide by 144:
board feet = (thickness_in × width_in × length_in) / 144
The 144 is just 12 × 12 — it converts cubic inches into board-foot units. A board that’s 1″ × 6″ × 96″ (a common 8-foot 1×6) works out to 1 × 6 × 96 ÷ 144 = 4 board feet. A 2″ × 8″ × 120″ joist is 2 × 8 × 120 ÷ 144 = 13.33 board feet. The nominal-versus-actual trap
Here’s where almost everyone trips. A “2×4” is not two inches by four inches. After the rough lumber is dried and planed smooth, a nominal 2×4 actually measures about 1.5″ × 3.5″. A nominal 1×6 is really 0.75″ × 5.5″. The name refers to the rough-sawn size before milling, not the board you carry home.
This matters enormously for board feet. By long-standing trade convention, softwood dimensional lumber is sold and priced using the nominal size — a 2×4 is billed as if it were a full 2″ × 4″ even though it isn’t — while you typically compute the real volume of hardwood using actual measured dimensions. Mixing the two up is how people end up shocked at the till. From board feet to a real price
Once you have the board-foot count, cost is simple multiplication:
total cost = board feet × price per board foot
Different species sit at wildly different price points, and that’s really the reason board feet exist as a unit — they let you compare wood by volume regardless of how a particular board is cut. Construction softwoods like pine and SPF run a couple of dollars per board foot; domestic hardwoods like oak and maple sit in the $6–7 range; cherry, mahogany, and walnut climb past $9–12. Board feet versus linear feet
The other number you’ll see is linear feet, and it’s a completely different idea: linear feet is just the running length of board, ignoring thickness and width entirely. If you need 40 feet of trim, that’s 40 linear feet whether the trim is skinny or wide. Lumberyards often stock and cut by linear foot, but they price hardwood by board foot, so you constantly need to move between the two.
The bridge is the cross-section. For a given board profile, linear feet tells you how many sticks of a length to grab, while board feet tells you how much you’ll pay. A long, wide, thick board racks up board feet fast even at modest linear footage — which is exactly why a single slab of figured walnut can cost more than a whole bundle of pine 1-bys.
